Tips for Entry Level Jobs in Fashion

This is Chris Kidd from StyleCareers.com. I'm writing to let you know about 4 GREAT TOOLS your students can use to get an internship OR their first job in the fashion industry. ALL of these tools are FREE. In addition, I am also including some valuable (and often over-looked) tips for new fashion industry job seekers. Please see below.

STYLECAREERS.COM

StyleCareers.com is the largest, fashion-only job listing site on the Internet. We list more jobs than WWD, ApparelNews and FashionCareerCenter.com combined! If your students are looking for home-office fashion industry internships or entry-level positions, StyleCareers.com is a great place to start. Please visit www.stylecareers.com for details.

Please note: there are a few fashion industry job listing sites that charge people to view their ads. We've found these sites prey on the inexperience of students. A lot of students find it hard to unsubscribe from these websites and are often charged for access beyond their intended usage period. Job boards should be free (like StyleCareers.com); please steer your students away from the pay sites.

STYLEPORTFOLIOS.COM

StylePortfolios.com is the only, online portfolio website focused on the various fashion-related industries. If you have design or visual merchandising students who need to communicate their talent visually, please have them create a FREE online portfolio on StylePortfolios.com (www.styleportfolios.com).

In addition to having their own unique URL, your students' portfolios will be in a searchable database that is used by many of the industry's leading brands and recruiting agencies.

MAYOROFTHEMALL.COM
MayorOfTheMall.com is the first, fashion-only store-level job listing site on the Internet. Unlike other retail job boards, MayorOfTheMall.com is focused on fashion-forward retail positions (store associates, store management, visual merchandising, in-store specialists, district management, etc...). If you have students looking for part-time work OR looking for a career in retail, MayorOfTheMall.com is a great tool for their job search. Please visit www.mayorofthemall.com for details.

FASHIONCAREERFAIRS.COM

StyleCareers.com will be hosting 2 fashion industry recruiting events this Spring (one in LA, one in NY). These recruiting events DO NOT allow students or entry-level job seekers. We do however, encourage students to volunteer for these events. Because the student volunteers interact with fashion-industry recruiters at the fair; many get their first job as a result of participating. Please visit www.fashioncareerfairs.com for details.

JOB SEARCH TIPS

We see a lot of resumes AND a lot of correspondence between job seekers and recuiters. As such, we've come up with 10 job search tips that will be VERY helpful for entry-level job seekers and hope that you'll share these with your students. Please see below...

1. Do not use a school, work or shared email address on your resume OR when applying to job listings. It is a better practice to use a personal email address.

2. Recruiters will read your email address. Do not use a "cute" or "crude" email address; something with a derivative of your name works best.

3. Do not use the phrase, "passion for fashion" in ANY correspondence with recruiters or hiring managers (or any professional conversation).

4. If you are a designer, graphic artist or visual merchandiser, make sure potential employers can see samples of your work. While we prefer that you use StylePortfolios.com (www.styleportfolios.com), there are a number of portfolio websites on the Internet (Portfolios.com, Coroflot.com, CreativeHotlist.com, etc...).

5. All resumes submitted via email should contain a message. At a bare minimum, specify the position to which you are applying. This is a good opportunity to tell the recruiter something that IS NOT on your resume.

6. Do not send your resume to multiple companies/recruiters at the same time. Address each email individually.

7. All resumes submitted via email should contain the Job Title and Job Code (if provided) in the subject line of your message. With the increasing popularity of spam filters, blank and/or poorly worded subject lines are more likely to get deleted.

8. If using a template when creating your resume, be sure to eliminate all remnants of the template. Recruiters see a lot of resumes and can tell when you used a pre-formatted resume template.

9. The file name for your resume should include your name and the word "resume." Never name your resume file with names like the following: myresume, bestresume, goodresume, elegantresume, etc...

10. Spell check your resume AND all correspondence with recruiters; no exceptions.

Up-to-date content is the key to keeping your visitors coming back.

Remember, old content, and links to old content are still searchable by search engines, so be sure to check all pages, PDFs, documents, links, and forms you may have on your site for old dates and incorrect or out-of-date information.

It is imperative to remove old pages, text, and images from your site.
